Academic Study

An IR degree can lead to a range of postgraduate courses from related masters (MAs in IR, Politics etc) to professional courses (PGCE—teaching) and conversion masters (Law). This section deals with academic MAs but this website also has a section on vocational qualifications.

Postgraduate Study in International Relations and Related Subjects
There is a lot to ponder when considering which direction to take in study after your first degree. This section aims to try and simplify the process for you with links to various sites which may be of interest. The purpose of this is to structure the decision-making process. However if you do decide to do a Masters degree the decision must be personal; only you are aware of your own priorities.

A way to start can be by asking yourself two questions: Where do I want to study, and which area of degree interests me most? The potential answers to these helps structure the information here. The information about the Universities offering Postgraduate courses is arranged around whether they are within striking distance of Nottingham (in the sense of being within reasonable constant travelling time) or not. According to this criteria they are divided into 'Local' and 'National' categories. In response to the second question, the courses themselves are classified into broad issue areas that include:

International Relations
International and/or Global Political Economy
Area Studies — for example EU or Asia Pacific
Strategic, Security and/or Peace Studies
Other

These are not the only possible areas. The range has been deliberately limited so as to provide a manageable amount of information. This site is a guide to helping you structure your thoughts; it’s not meant to be the ultimate reference point. In fact the lists are probably not exhaustive in either category (Geography/Subject area), as Universities are constantly changing what they have on offer and, what you cover in detail will be determined by how you structure your thoughts of what suits you. Our advice is to sit down, make some basic decisions, and then surf the various sites to get your own feel of what’s on offer and how it is presented (often a good guide as to how courses pan out).

All the sites quoted here were found using Yahoo, by searching for the Place Name, plus 'university'.
