Language

If you learned a language in school you may have a positive or negative view of the experience. If you have learned a language because you needed to communicate, or have developed what you learned in school this way you will likely have a much more positive view. It can be exhilarating to talk to someone in their language...you realise it is not just a question of translation and it is almost as if you understand things in a different way. (I for instance wave my arms around animatedly when speaking Spanish in a way that English is unable to inspire!).

So, whilst learning a language for the sake of it may seem pointless, and while the early stages of not being able to say much may be frustrating (especially when learning your first foreign language), do not underestimate the possibilities of language acquisition! People respond very positively, especially if they know you are an English speaker. A language may help you in your career...ticking that little box for speaking a foreign language might get you an interview...but more importantly it is very rewarding. So, if you are going travelling at the end of your degree say in Europe or Latin America why not take advantage of the university’s language programme? You can study for credits or as a supplementary module. Worth thinking about.
