For work with International Organisations, a postgraduate qualification is likely to be necessary—because degrees in Europe tend to be longer and postgraduate study is increasingly the norm in the USA. A great deal of relevant experience is also likely to be needed—for the UN the norm may be as much as 6-8 years.

Language skills and inter-cultural experience gained through study or working abroad are also likely to be important if you wish to use your IR degree specifically in the work context.
