Academic Study, part 4

Other IR-related Courses

Area Studies
This is only a sample of other courses at your disposal; there is no substitute for navigating around the web for yourself. Each time I think about ending this list, another potential course pops into my mind (eg: Peace Research at Bradford) so please don’t regard this list as exhaustive.

Oxford and Cambridge Universities
Cambridge
www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/gsprospectus/subjects/index.html
Oxford

http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/postgraduate/courses/

M.Phil. in an exhaustive list of global Areas.

These are universities where, undoubtedly, it is better to be sure of the area you want to study before going on to the site. You can be pretty sure that if you’ve thought of an area, then they will cover it. The detail contained within the sites is massive (perhaps too much to take in!), which is why it is best to have some broad outline of your area of interest before going there. In this sense then, the sites are too large and unwieldy to comfortably navigate around.

Durham
http://www.dur.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/programmes/

MAs in a variety of Far and Middle Eastern subjects

Again, a wide variety of courses on offer. There are staff email addresses and an online application form available. Unsurprisingly, given the smaller size, the site is less cumbersome to negotiate than the Oxford/Cambridge sites.

Institutes of Latin American Studies

University of Liverpool

MA in Latin American Studies
http://www.liv.ac.uk/ilas/postgrad/index.htm

There are staff emails available, though no online application. There is only scant detail on the course provided, generally, this is not one of the better sites.

University of London

Institute for the study of the Americas
http://americas.sas.ac.uk/postgraduate_study/

  1. MA in Area Studies (Latin America)
  2. MA in Area Studies (United States)
  3. M.Sc. in Latin American Politics
  4. MSc in Globalisation and Latin American Development
  5. MSc in US Politics and Contemporary History
  6. MA in Area Studies (Comparative American Studies)
  7. MSc in US Foreign Policy

In terms of making an application, this site is not particularly informative, with no online application form, and few contact details. There are reasonably good details on the courses themselves.

University of Sheffield
http://www.shef.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/courses/
A wide range of master’s degrees is offered, mainly centring on Chinese, Japanese and Far Eastern areas of interest. Contact details on the site are reasonable, and an online application form is available.

Schools of Oriental and African Studies

School of Oriental and African Studies ("SOAS")
http://www.soas.ac.uk/admissions/pg/postgraduate.html
Massive range of Master’s level programmes (MA and MSc). There is lots of information available (again, bordering on the overload level) and email addresses are provided. There is an online application form available.

Defence and Security

Cranfield University
The Royal Military College of Science
http://www.cranfield.ac.uk/dcmt/postgraduatestudy/index.jsp

As the name of this institution implies, it runs a number of courses at the postgraduate level that are concerned with defence, security and strategic studies issues. Compared to last year, there is much better detail on the website about courses, and facility to apply or contact staff for further information.

International Business

London Business School
http://www.london.edu/

Provides a range of MAs and MBAs.

There is some detail about the courses offered on the site. There is an online application form, and plenty of contact details are available.

Manchester Business School
http://www.mbs.ac.uk/mba/index.aspx

MBAs, and other buisness oriented masters courses.

A range of MBA courses are listed, with course and contact details given. An online application form is available, using Adobe Acrobat.

University of Reading ICMA Centre
http://www.ismacentre.rdg.ac.uk/

A range of Master’s level courses in Business Studies are on offer.

There is an impressive level of detail offered on both courses and individual modules. There is also an online application form, but no staff email addresses were on offer.
