Studying Abroad
This section is not comprehensive. It attempts to give the briefest of overviews of the sorts (and quality) of information you can discover when considering postgraduate study in another country. The range of countries that offer the courses, and the number of courses offered, is unimaginable. With these provisos in mind, three institutions have been chosen as the focus, with the intention that they should serve as a representative of the global area from which they originate. The areas chosen are: Japan (as a representative of study in East Asia), the United States (representing North America) and a European University. In all cases the institution used is based in (or near) a city, and the lectures are offered in English.

NORTH AMERICA

As with the United Kingdom universities, there is an online application form available. There is also a lot of information on the admissions pages about actual and potential sources of funding. All the pages are relatively easy to access and the information is simply phrased and well laid out. The fact that the applicant may not be familiar with the living conditions and general layout of the city is anticipated, and there is a lot of extra-curricular information available on the site.

This was the most difficult example to choose, but a Finnish university was chosen for a number of reasons. Firstly, Finland has a relatively long history of providing degree courses in English, thus their institutions are well practised at offering help and guidance regarding enquiries. Secondly, the level of information on this site, and its accessibility is very impressive. There is an online application form available and an abundance of contact e-mail addresses for enquiries of an academic and extra-curricular nature.

HOWEVER, this is not to say that studying in Finland is "better" than anywhere else. What is described above could equally apply to any number of other European countries.

ASIA- PACIFIC

This particular university is a campus type institution (i.e. more self-contained than other universities) and is located 230 kilometres from Tokyo. The website is very impressive and contains a great range of detailed information on the university and living in Japan. There is a brief description of the courses offered, however, lots of e-mail addresses are provided for further enquiries. There is an online application system; however, it is only available during the times of the year when the university accepts applications (see the site for details). You can register your interest at any time and the university will e-mail you when the application system is open.
