Support materials

The Support materials consist of the four areas below. The Confidence Matrices and Online ECDL/ICDL materials can be accessed from within each module.

Confidence Matrices (Self assessment forms)
Confidence matrix documents, or 'can do' lists, list each element of the syllabus and can be used to self assess of your knowledge in that particular module. This is a good starting point for each module.
(more information...)

We have some confidence matrix documents for each ECDL/ICDL module. These matrix documents, or 'can do' lists, list each element of the syllabus and can be used to self assess of your knowledge in that particular module. Each document can be completed online using the check boxes or can be printed off and completed by hand. Once you have completed the form, you should be able to build up a good picture of the areas where you may need to boost your knowledge and you can use this information to help you compile an action plan for your preparation to take the test in this module. These forms are available to all - you don't need to register to use them.

Online ECDL/ICDL Materials
Learning materials in document format that can be read on screen or printed out. These are geat for locating specific syllabus elements identified in the confidence matrices.
(more information...)

If you learn better with the read-and-follow-along style of materials, then these are what you need. They have the advantage that all the activities are done in the actual application you're learning. For each module there is a manual containing the training which is accompanied by an exercise book giving you the opportunity to practice what you have learnt. For most of the modules there are also ready made files for you to use in the practice exercises. These materials are free to use and cover Office 2000, Office XP and Office 2003 and can be used on or off campus. For the ECDL/ICDL we recommend working with the Office XP materials as the preferred test is conducted in Office XP simulations.

You are able to use these materials at no charge, even if you have no intention of taking the ECDL/ICDL Qualification. They can be used for spot reference to build a particular skill or as a resource to build your general IT skills. You do not need to register or attend the drop-in sessions to use these materials.

Free Interactive Online Training Course
Advance Learning offer a free online training course through their online course provision, ALISON.
(more information...)

You may prefer to follow a structured course with interactive practice and testing at regular intervals within the course. ALISON provides access to an online course where you can monitor your progress as you work through each module. You can either listen to or read the the information and instruction depending on your preference.

Each module is broken into several sections and each section is broken into parts, making it easy for you to track your progress through the course material. You will need to register for the site in order to access the training courses. Once you have registered you will be able to choose from a number of courses including non-ECDL/ICDL software training, touch typing and Health and Safety courses). For the appropriate ECDL/ICDL training make sure that you choose the ECDL UK (Syllabus 4-5 Win XP/Office 2003) course.

To register go to http://alison.com/ and click on the REGISTER button. You will need to complete a short form including limited contact information (your name, email address, town and country). You will then be asked for some more information about your interests that you do not need to complete. However, ALISON is provided free through the use of advertising. It would help to maintain this free resource if you do give more information about your interests which will be used to filter the adverts that appear in a small panel on the right of the screen.

Once you have registered you will receive a confirmation email containing a web page you will need to access to complete the registration. The login route is also at http://alison.com/.

ECDL Books
There are many books available to support the study of the ECDL/ICDL, some with CDs of practise files to work with. These can be borrowed from public libraries or purchased. Remember to check that the book is following the ECDL/ICDL Syllabus version 4.

Diagnostic Tests
The online testing system used at Nottingham Trent also offers the opprotunity to take a diagnostic test before you take the real test. (more information...)

We use the Activ online testing materials for the ECDL/ICDL. Included in the cost of a test is the chance to use their diagnostic/mock test. We recommend that you take the diagnostic test if you are thinking of sitting the ECDL/ICDL test as it will help you identify any remaining gaps in your knowledge for that module. We can schedule a diagnostic test for you to take at either a drop-in or a test session. The cost of a diagnostic test is included in the £3.50 cost of the actual test which you will be asked to pay at the time of the actual test.
Please note: you will have to register to take the ECDL/ICDL before you can sit any diagnostic or actual tests.
