Audio notes (Podcasting)

At present there are no facilities for podcasting within the unversity. However, we are able to both record and edit audio for use online using either Wimba Voice Tools, Adobe Captivate or simple MP3 audio files within the VLP. We have several easy to use hand-held voice-recorders (PDF) for staff use in recording lectures, narration or capturing seminar sessions.

You may also wish to consider combining audio with lecture slides to create a virtual lecture using Adobe's Captivate tool.

Suggested uses of audio are:

  • Using your own voice to lecture, guide or coach your students
  • Delivering the correct pronunciation of technical or foreign terms
  • Enabling students to hear facts, discussions and opinions from experts in their field
  • Student encouragement by the voice of somebody they know and respect.
  • Dialogues in foreign languages (for language students)

(Suggested uses adapted from "Options for Audio" - a one-page MS Word document with some advice on using audio for student learning - available from Leicester University's IMPALA project.)

Podcasting
Podcasting is the process of creating an audio show or collection of files (usually in MP3 audio format, but may include images or video) at a unique "feed" web address. Podcasts are designed to include talk shows, tutorials, music, or other audio content. People can "subscribe" to this feed by submitting the feed address to an aggregator application such as iTunes. When new shows or episodes become available in the podcast they will be automatically downloaded to a user's computer. A podcast is distinguished from other digital media formats by its ability to be subscribed to, and content downloaded automatically, rather than manually located and saved by the user.
