Skills

The fact that you are at University almost certainly indicates that you have already demonstrated a range of intellectual skills and developed and identified other skills which you have. The importance of skills may be suggested as two-fold. First of all skills are important so that you can develop and lead a fulfilling career as part of a satisfying life. But skills are also important, because in today's globalised economy the price of not having skills can be very high indeed. Not all will fall the way of those featured in Nick Davies' Dark Heart but not to have skills is to be superfluous to the requirements of an unsentimental economic system. (Dark Heart is well worth reading, not least because significant sections of the book are set in Nottingham).

This said we can't all have the same skills and if we did it would be unfortunate in a world where division of labour means that different jobs require different particular strengths and characteristics. So, important steps in your personal development and career choice are identifying what skills you already have and which you think you would like to develop further. If you already have a particular career in mind you will also want to identify those areas where you are weak and where you will need to develop certain skills. The exercises provided by myfuture (link to the right) take some time, but are a great place to start the process of identifying and developing skills. (After you register, look for Skills in the Identifying section. They are not explicitly aimed at undergraduates but should help not just in terms of skills evaluation but also in terms of reflection which you are asked to do next).
