DigiMap, GoogleMaps, GoogleEarth & MS MapPoint (PC / Web based mapping)
Supporting Geography as well as any other subject group, applications
and tools that we provide assistance for are:
- Digimap: is a collection of services that deliver maps and map data of the UK in Higher education.
This data can be downloaded and used with GIS software or maps can be createwd online
for learning & teaching use.
- Google Maps: This is a free web-based
mapping service application and technology provided by Google. Combining Mapping detail and
satellite views, maps can easily linked to online and embedded in web pages.
The following examples have been developed using Google
Maps, by LTSU in conjunction with researchers in International Relations, to plot instances
of terrorist activity in the Russian/Chechnya conflict.
- Simple
map
Provides geographic reference to terrorist activity in this conflict.

- Timeline
map
Adds a clickable timeline that takes the user through points in the conflict in chronological
order.

- Google Earth: is a free application that can be downloaded
that provides maps and satellite views onto a 3D surface. Data can be added, virtual
tours and fly-throughs can be created, and basemaps printed. Contact us for further information.
- Microsoft MapPoint: is a computer mapping application available in GEE012. It allows you
to do a variety of things, including:
- find places or addresses
- plot routes for road journeys
- draw on a map
- map demographic data that comes supplied with the package
- map you own data
MapPoint has a variety of mapping tools that allow users to find specific
locations using street names and post codes. It also provides users with drawing tools to
allow maps to be customized, and features to be drawn or highlighted. Users can plot routes
(on the road system) including precise directions, distances and estimated journey times.
