ESRI ArcView (Geographical Information System / GIS)What is GIS?A Geographical Information System (GIS) is a computer based system that enables the analysis and display of geographic data. This can involve plotting specific points on an underlying basemap, or layering different types of data on top of each other. The key difference between GIS and simple computer-based mapping is its ability to perform analysis - to answer questions and solve problems in the spatial world, using a variety of tools to calculate and quantify. GIS has a wide variety of uses, including town and country planning, utility management, engineering, military, transportation, and business uses. Note that the term "GIS" can also be used to refer to Geographical Information Science. What is ESRI ArcView?ESRI ArcView is the most widely used GIS software - the closest thing there is to an industry standard. It allows users to import or digitize their own data, analyse it, and display the results. LTSU currently support the teaching of ArcView in Human Geography, but are able to support its use throughout the College of Arts and Education.
