About Students in Tandem

Students in Tandem is a scheme which offers a unique opportunity for students to develop their fluency and cultural awareness in a target language while studying at Nottingham Trent University. The project, launched in 1993, has hundreds of participants each year. Many UK students found that the scheme helped them in their language studies and international students enjoyed the contact with a Nottingham student, particularly at the beginning of the academic year.

The scheme is based on a simple idea:

2 people (1 international and 1 UK) meet regularly to use both languages and to make progress throughout the year. The scheme enhances not only the language learning experience, but also personal development. Furthermore it allows reflection by the student on their own language and facilitates contacts in the country concerned.

The partnership is offered in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. If you speak Japanese or Mandarin, we may be able to organize a small number of partnerships, so please register if you are interested. The scheme is open to any member of Nottingham Trent University, who has at least a reasonable grasp (e.g. standard comparable to GCSE or University Language Programme Stage 2) of their chosen international language, whether or not they are studying the language formally.
