Internet resources are becoming increasingly relevant in many academic fields. However, for those with little experience of IT, finding the information you require can be very difficult. INTR31901 will attempt to help students get information from the net and in so doing encourage them to use it more widely in this and other modules.

This section of the course is neither compulsory nor assessed. That said, it's provision of information in a user friendly and entertaining format, will be useful in providing you with information for your essays and exams.

As well as information, these pages also suggest tasks which may provide inspiration for essay titles as well as practice for exams. Since the net is likely to play an increasing part in teaching in the future, these pages are part of an ongoing effort to provide better teaching via the world wide web.

These pages are in a process of ongoing updating and construction and you should be aware that much information will be available beyond their scope. Any comments you have about this component of INTR31901 would be welcome; they can be given to the module leader and will be helpful to the faculty's Open and Distance Learning team.

Finding your way around
We hope it's easy to navigate around ERIC - if it's not, please let us know!

ERIC's home page has a contents list which you've probably already encountered. You can also use the map to get an overview of the site and a full listing of all the pages. There are text links to the home page and the map at the base of every page. Each page after the home page also has a header with graphical, text links and a short-cut menu:

Using the webboard
ERIC links to the Webboard, a message board and chat room service, where the module has its own online discussions. Follow this link for module news from Lloyd and Roy, to join live discussions, or to post and reply to comments.

If you've never used this message board before, you'll have to create a 'profile' for yourself first...just follow the directions on-screen when you get there. It's probably easiest if you use your usual computer username, then make up a different password.

Using search engines
When you're using search engines like Yahoo, make use of the directory listings they offer. For example, you might try Society and culture: Environment: Organisations.

If you'd like advice on making better use of search engines, Google's help pages give help that applies to Google itself, or can be applied to using other search engines.

If you experience problems using ERIC, please get in touch.

If you just can't get used to Webboard, or the web in general, drop in to IT clinic. Clinic sessions take place in room 012, Clifton Main Building every weekday in term time, 12.30 - 1.30pm.
