Granite obelisk on granite plinth and stepped base inside the castle grounds (adjacent to the entrance).
As the incised gold inscription on the front of the plinth attests, this large obelisk commemorates the officers and men of Her Majesty's 59th Regiment who died in battle or of wounds in the Afghan campaigns from 1878 to 1880. The other three sides of the plinth include the names, ranks and day of death of those who perished, and significantly the main inscription tells us that the memorial was 'Erected by Comrades'. At the time of the Afghan wars it was unusual to find memorials on which the names of regular soldiers were mentioned.
